Sept. 9, 2004 – Saturday commemorates the third anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and the crash of United Airlines Flight 93 at Shanksville, Pa.
To honor the event, Gov. Charles Turnbull has proclaimed Sept. 11 as a Day of Remembrance across the territory.
In addition to those who died on Sept. 11, he called on residents to remember those who have died since then in the worldwide battle against terrorism.
In his proclamation, Turnbull said that the nation must stand committed to wiping out terrorism and those who plot the murders of innocent civilians throughout the world.
Government House spokesman Rina Roebuck said the governor has issued a similar proclamation every year.
Hubert Raimer, commander of the American Legion post in St. Thomas, said the organization has planned a ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m. at Emancipation Garden.
"We have to make sure we always remember these people," he said.
No one could be reached at the American Legion posts in St. Croix and St. John to determine if the members plan events, but Raimer said he knew St. Croix had an event scheduled.
Roebuck said that several churches also plan events.
