Virgin Islanders Have Chance to Land on Broadway

Sept. 10, 2004 – Broadway actress Lillias White is in St. Thomas this weekend where she and Madeline McCray will hold auditions on Sunday, Sept. 12, from noon until 3 p.m. at the Windward Passage Hotel. They are looking for male actors age 14 to 25 with strong singing voices who also chant, and rap.
Fifteen of the V.I. young adults are being cast to perform with Tony Award winner White in a new musical play. The story, written by St. Croix Center Stage artistic director Madeline McCray, with original lyrics and music by Broadway composer Timothy Graphenreed, centers around Minky a young girl born on St. Croix who wants to leave the island to pursue her dream of becoming a star on Broadway like her famous aunt. When Minky’s Mango Mania, a local singing group, wins a contest they head to New York where they learn some lessons about life and cultural appreciation.
The play, through dramatic portrayals by the young cast, evokes names and contributions made by some of the Virgin Islands most dynamic leaders such as, Queen Mary, Casper Holstein, Edward Blyden, D. Hamilton Jackson and others.
V. I. Saints Journey to Broadway will tour to New York and North Carolina in July and August 2005 after workshop process throughout the year.
