V.I. Port Authority Warns of Computer Glitch Affecting Flights Worldwide

The V.I. Port Authority issued a notice to travelers early Friday that large-scale tech outages are disrupting airlines and businesses around the world and they should contact their carriers directly for flight information.

The notice, posted to Facebook just before 6:30 on Friday morning, links to an article by CNN, which said the outage appears to be tied to a software update for Windows hosts by the firm CrowdStrike, based in Austin, Texas, which provides cloud services for companies worldwide, including airlines.

The glitch has affected operations at banks, hospitals, airlines, broadcasters and other businesses and stranded passengers at airports around the globe, according to reports.

According to the New York Times, the problem could persist for most of the day, if not longer, because the fix could require companies to “reboot every computer manually into safe mode, delete a specific file, and then restart the computer normally.”
