WAPA Continues Work on Emancipation Drive for Feeder 8B Underground Electrical Project

Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority

The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (WAPA) announces that Haugland VI, WAPA’s contractor, continues work in manholes on Emancipation Drive (Hannah’s Rest Road) on St. Croix. Underground cable pulling and installation work for the Feeder 8B (Emancipation Drive) Underground Project will commence on Thursday, June 6, and is scheduled to continue through the end of August, with work occurring Monday through Friday.

The project will run along Emancipation Drive from the intersection of Melvin H. Evans Highway to the intersection of Fisher Street, Frederiksted town. During this time, traffic may, at times, be affected by single-lane closures. Flaggers, traffic cones and signs will be onsite to direct the flow of traffic. Motorists are asked to drive with caution in the impacted areas and follow the directions of flaggers.

This project is meant to replace a portion of the overhead distribution lines with underground cables. Underground infrastructure significantly decreases the impact of windstorms on the electrical system, greatly reducing environmental debris and restoration time during such events.
