University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) Releases New Mangroves In the Classroom Video The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) is pleased to announce the video release of its “Mangroves in the Classroom” project. It was filmed and edited by local filmmaker and research scientist Dan Mele. The 5-minute video highlights a mangrove restoration project on St. Thomas, made possible through a unique partnership between UVI, GRROE USVI Mangroves, the Virgin Islands Department of Education, the Schmidt Ocean Coalition and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Environmental Literacy Program. Kristin Wilson Grimes, Ph.D., and Allie Durdall of UVI’s Center for Marine and Environmental Studies (CMES) lead the “Mangroves in the Classroom” program.

The video follows the in-and-out-of-the-classroom experiences of Charlotte Amalie High School biology teacher Vernon Callwood and his marine biology students, as well as program facilitators and UVI graduate and undergraduate students, Laura Palomino and Amanda Boissiere. Through interviews and breathtaking footage, the video shares the transformative impact the project has had on students, their understanding of environmental conservation and their commitment to creating a sustainable future.
