The Virgin Islands Department of Agriculture informs the community of a scheduled closure of the St. Croix Abattoir, effective Monday, May 24, for emergency repairs to mechanical issues.

The priorities are ensuring that the abattoir operates at its best with the health and safety of the team, and the facility and the quality production of food is in compliance with USDA Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) standards. Once repairs are completed, the abattoir will update the community on the reopening date.

Once reopened, the St. Croix Abattoir will resume normal operations receiving cattle, goats and sheep from 7:30-10 a.m. on Mondays and pigs from 7:30-10 a.m. on Tuesdays. From 7:30-10 a.m., Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays will be reserved for slaughter overflows, shipping and maintenance tasks.  Monthly shipments of animals from St. Thomas-St. John will also resume.

For more information on the abattoir and other V.I. Department of Agriculture services, visit the website at https://doa.vi.gov or call 778-0997.
