Anguilla Landfill Reopens After Fire

Operations at the Anguilla Landfill on St. Croix resumed Sunday after the Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority had to close the facility for a fire.

The landfill was closed at 6 a.m. Saturday due to an active fire reported at 11:04 p.m. Friday. Virgin Islands Fire Service and VIWMA contractors and personnel brought the fire under control and by 2 p.m. Saturday all fire and smoke was suppressed.

It was at least the sixth fire at the St. Croix landfill in the past 12 months.

Under the terms of a nine-year-old settlement agreement, Anguilla was supposed to close on Sept. 30, 2018. VIWMA plans to open a new landfill in nearby Estate Pearl.
