Police on St. John said Friday they were still looking for clues to a shooting that took place along a busy thoroughfare in Cruz Bay on Wednesday night. One man was treated for gunshot wounds after authorities said they found him lying in the street near a popular nightclub.
A spokesperson for the Virgin Islands Police Department said several days later authorities had not made an arrest in the Aug. 6 shooting. Spokesman Karl Ceasar said an appeal is being made to the public to find the answers.
Investigators say the victim – identified as Kwane Jean-Baptiste – had not provided many answers, Ceasar said.
“At this point, Jean-Baptiste refused to give any information to the officers about the incident saying that ‘he doesn’t know what happened.’“
Investigators said the shooting took place along Kongens Gade, a gathering spot for evening diners and sports bar patrons.
“Upon arrival, officers found an alert and responsive black male in his early to mid-30s, Kwane Jean-Baptiste, a local resident,” Caesar said.
The victim had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to Myrah Keating Smith Clinic for treatment. Detectives from the VIPD Criminal Investigation Bureau questioned Jean-Baptiste while he was transported to the Schneider Regional Medical Center.
Crime scene technicians recovered seven bullet casings were at the scene near Cap’s Place Nightclub.
This case is currently under investigation by the Criminal Investigation Bureau.
Police urged anyone who may have been in the vicinity of Kongens Gade, between Bayside Convenience Store and Cap’s Place, and may have seen or heard anything related to the Aug. 6 shooting to call 340-714-9830, the VIPD Criminal Investigation Bureau at 340-714-9807, or the anonymous tip service, Crime Stoppers USVI, at 1-800-222-8477.
