DOE Releases Make-up Schedules, Daily Time Changes for Public Schools

The Virgin Islands Department of Education (DOE) has released its make-up schedule for schools affected by the delay in openings at the beginning of the 2018-19 school year.

As mandated by the Virgin Islands Code (Title 17, V.I.C. §61a), students should receive 1,080 instructional hours each academic year. In compliance with the law, the DOE has decided to extend the school day as opposed to adding instructional days to the calendar. Extra time allotted to school days range from 30-90 minutes with some schools starting earlier and/or ending later.

Make-up schedules began on Nov. 26 and will end on various dates according to each school’s make-up plan. Once the make-up schedule ends, the school will return to its original start and end times.

In addition, schools will adjust lunch schedules as needed. The school lunch program will also provide snack options for students.
