CFVI Announces Availability of Academic Scholarships for Students and Displaced Students

Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands

The Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands (CFVI) has announced that the annual academic scholarships for graduate, undergraduate and vocational students are now available. The foundation’s mission is to enhance the quality of life for children, youth and families in the territory by making enriching opportunities attainable. Funds for these offerings are provided through the generosity of CFVI donors.

In 2017, CFVI awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships to students in the St. Croix and St. Thomas-St. John districts. “There are few things I find as rewarding as giving out our scholarships annually,” said Dee Baecher-Brown, DFVI president. “We are helping students achieve one of the greatest goals of their entire lives — an education.”

CFVI will be awarding annual scholarships based on the following criteria. An applicant must:

  • Be a senior in or graduate of a U.S. Virgin Island high school; (Students who were displaced by hurricanes Irma and Maria and were formally enrolled at a V.I. high school or college during the 2017-2018 school year are also eligible to apply.)
  • Be enrolled in or have applied for admission to an accredited four-year institution with a program leading to a bachelor’s degree; For graduate scholarships, a student must be currently enrolled in or have applied for admission to an accredited institution with a program leading to an advanced degree (Master’s, PhD, JD, MD, etc.); For vocational school scholarships, a student must be enrolled at the Raphael O. Wheatley Skills Center.
  • Demonstrate financial need.

Selection will be based on the student’s overall financial need, academic progress, extracurricular activities and answers to essay questions.

A separate application form is available for displaced students. Select the undergraduate scholarship application in the drop-down menu that is labeled “for displaced students only.”

Applications for undergraduate, graduate and vocational scholarships can be submitted through an online portal at http://www.cfvi.fluidreview.com/.

New applicants must create an account with fluid review before they begin the application process. They will receive a confirmation email once the account has been established. Returning applicants should use the same log-in information they used to apply the previous year. The deadline to submit a scholarship application is April 6, 2018.

For technical assistance, contact Brittany Brin Robinson, the CFVI communications manager, at bbrin@cfvi.net  or 774-6031.

In the aftermath of hurricanes Irma and Maria, CFVI knows many students are now faced with challenges that may delay the opportunity of pursuing higher education. Now, more than ever, it is asking individuals, businesses and organizations to consider establishing a scholarship fund with the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands.

With their support, students can continue to thrive in their academic careers and become the future leaders of our territory. If interested in donating to an existing scholarship fund or establishing a new scholarship fund, contact Katrin Braddell, development director, at katrinb@cfvi.net.
