Invitations to this year’s Transfer Day Centennial Celebrations are out and, according to the territory’s Centennial Commission, U.S. President Donald Trump and other high ranking federal officials are on the list of potential attendees.
At a meeting on St. Thomas Tuesday, Centennial Commission member Colette Monroe said the invitations also went out last week to: the U.S. Secretary of State, Secretary of Interior, 49 members of Congress including Democratic and Republican leadership, most heads of neighboring Caribbean countries, the Danish Ambassador to the United States, the Prime Minister of Denmark, General Consul of Denmark to the Virgin Islands Soren Blak, speakers from the Danish parliament, three former V.I. governors, the governors of Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands, along with the territory’s 15 senators, among others.
So far, a “positive” response has been received from three Danish dignitaries, including the prime minister of Denmark, Monroe said.
Meanwhile, in other news, the Commission discussed:
– Differences in the Centennial program for St. Thomas-St. John and St. Croix,
– Differences in the budget between the two districts, specifically in payments for items such as entertainment and transportation,
– The possibility of having fireworks on St. Croix, which the commission is putting $4,950 toward. Members of the St. Croix business community have already raised $11,000 for the fireworks, officials said.
– The system for paying vendors and other obligations,
– Selling Centennial merchandise, and
– The invitation list for Government House receptions in both districts, which the Commission said it is responsible for paying for.
