V.I. National Track and Field Athletes Making Final Attempts to Qualify for Major Championships

The Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation (VITFF) announced today that, aware of current deadlines for qualifying for major championships in track and field, V.I. National Track and Field team members are making final efforts at the end of this Olympiad to make those marks.

Already qualified for the Rio Olympic games are Laverne Jones-Ferrette in the 200m, Eddie Lovett in the 110m hurdles and Muhammad Halim in the triple jump. Jones-Ferrette landed in Brussels, Belgium, on Wednesday and will compete on the European circuit in her final tune-up and last effort to qualify in the 100m. Rio will be her fourth Olympics. Eddie Lovett recently competed in Guyana and Barbados for his final tune-up for Rio, which will be his first Olympics.

Leon Hunt competed this past weekend in the Jamaica National Championship and travel to the Bahamas to make his last effort to qualify for his first Olympics. Two-time Olympian Tabarie Henry will make his last effort to qualify for Rio in Jacksonville.

V.I. National Junior Under-20 team member Nia Jack, the Pan Am Youth 100m champion, and Myia Dorsey, a 200m and 400m qualifier, will travel to Poland next week to compete in the IAAF World Under-20 Track and Field Championships. Jack, a graduate of St. Croix Educational Complex High School, has earned a scholarship to Alabama State University; Dorsey has earned a scholarship to Purdue University and will enter her freshman year this fall.

Khadijah Clouden, a junior at Virginia State University and Fred Dorsey, a junior at the University of Kentucky, will travel to El Salvador to compete in the NACAC Under-23 Track and Field Championships. Clouden will compete in the triple jump; Dorsey will compete in the long jump and the 100m.

Athletes competed over the indoor and outdoor seasons in an effort to make qualifying standards for the above-listed competitions including college meets, V.I. National Track and Field Championships held two weeks ago at Kean High School track and the OECS Championships in the British Virgin Islands last week where junior and senior athletes Mikeala Smith, Malique Smith, David Walter, Randy Antoine and Ahmed Joseph had strong performances.

VITFF officials expressed their appreciation to the athletes, their coaches and the support of the Virgin Islands Olympic Committee, the International Association of Athletics Federation and the Government of the Virgin Islands for financial support over the past Olympiad, which has made it possible for the V.I. National Track and Field team members to pursue their international championships, college teams and Olympic goals.
