p>A man awaiting trial on an assault charge was arrested early Saturday and charged with firearm and narcotics violations, according to the V.I. Police Department.
Akil Santiago of St. Croix was arrested at 3: 23 a.m. Police were conducting a late night enforcement initiative at a Christiansted nightclub, when an officer inside the nightclub noticed man adjacent to him drop an object. The officer saw that it was a receiver for a firearm, according to police.
Upon further investigation, Santiago was arrested and charged with possession of firearm and possession of narcotics. Santiago was free while awaiting trial on a charge of first-degree assault. He was arrested for that charge in March 2015, but the trial date is still pending, police said.
