The last few years, the St. Thomas-St. John Private School Arawak Warriors have been the main competition during Charlotte Amalie High School’s recent championship run, but after the Arawaks’ 40-6 loss Friday, the question is, who’s left to beat the “mighty” Chickenhawks?
During the off-season, the Arawaks lost their head coach and practice facility, leaving their performance this year up in the air for most football fans. But Kyle Edwards of CAHS didn’t leave much room for doubt Friday as he took the opening kick-off 80 yards for the touchdown – the two-point conversion was good, giving CAHS the 8-0 lead.
On the Chickenhawks’ next possession, after receiving the ball near mid-field, CAHS drove the ball 42 yards in five plays. Edwards had a 29-yard run and fellow running back Dyami Isles capped it off with the touchdown. Leayle King added the two-point conversion to bump the score up to 16-0.
In the second half, the Arawaks got the ball first. A few plays into the series, Asante Richards broke a 42-yard touchdown run, breaking several tackles on his way to the end zone and the Arawaks’ only score of the day.
On the very next possession, Edwards caught a 61-yard pass from CAHS quarterback Mekhi Abramson for a touchdown and Shakeem John got the two-point conversion to push the lead 24-6.
The next possession, CAHS’ Romal Garcia intercepted Arawaks’ quarterback Fernando Silva III and took it to the house; Isles made the two-point conversion, pushing the score to 32-6, while Edwards – a strong MVP candidate so far this year – put the nail in the coffin with a 54-yard touchdown run.
Isles’ run again tacked on the two points, leaving the final score 40-6. The win moves CAHS’ record to 2-0, while the Arawaks fell to 0-2.
The Arawaks’ next game is Saturday at Lionel Roberts Stadium, where they will be facing the visiting Central High School Caribs. CAHS gets a bye-week.
