Children’s Triathlon Set for Sunday

The Virgin Islands Triathlon Federation is calling for more racers and volunteers for their Grand Finale Junior Triathlon Sunday at Cramer’s Park. The race is the final installment of their yearly six-race “Junior Tri VI” series.

“Our hope is to just get kids interested in becoming more active,” said federation secretary Theresa Harper.

The race is for children between the ages of 5 and 15 with four age groups competing at different distances. The youngest, children 5-6, will swim 25 meters, bike a half-mile and run a quarter-mile while the oldest group, children 12-15, will swim 200 meters, bike three miles and run one mile.

Children 7-8 will swim 50 meters, bike a half-mile, and run a quarter-mile, and children 9-11 will swim 100 meters, bike one mile, and run a half-mile.

“The distances are so short and doable that you really can just come out without a lot of training,” Harper said. “We just want it to be a fun experience for them so they’ll want to come out and do it again.”

The race begins at 8 a.m. at Cramer’s Park with same-day registration available from 7 to 7:45 a.m. Children require sneakers, bike helmets and their parent’s signature.

The Triathlon Federation will rent bikes and helmets to any children who need them.

“So there’s no excuses,” Harper said. “If you don’t have a bike, we have one for you.”
