On the 6th of June 2009 we celebrated the life and memories of Daniel, better known as PA. First let me say that the number of friends that showed up at Hull Bay was impressive. Large enough to make you think about your own passing from this world and who would notice. Those of you that knew this gentleman would never under estimate the crowd. It was large!
Most people knew him knew him as the cranky guy at either Hull Bay Hide Away or Randy’s. Today I learned much more about this greatly appreciated man. Stories about his first on-island fishing job and last his job as a pole climber for a satellite company gave everyone more insight about PA as the man.
Most people knew him as PA but never really knew his real name. Daniel was from Michigan and derived has nickname by commandeering the PA system from a patrol car and using it in the effort seeking a lost friend. The term PA stuck.
Often considered a gruff and abrupt personality but in fact was an individual that loved children. Speaking today was one young lady that said that upon returning from school she was quizzed by PA as to the homework assignment, was the work done, and did she do her best. An un-nominated guardian who wanted the best for people that came into his path. Quietly he took on this position and was explained to his actions directly could be attributed to her achievement of a great student.
There is a common bond between Viet Nam veterans and chatting with PA conveying that I also was a veteran serving as a medic in Nam in 1969 we immediately had a lasting friendship. In today’s memorial guests were asked to get up and say a few words. Speakers were requested to express either remembrances or events related to PA. Touched and finding it hard to talk I got up and relied a few stories about PA. Most important was the immediate bond of friendship with PA and his clear determination to voice his opinion of what he considered as right or wrong. Those of you that knew him would clearly agree.
Lastly let me state that PA passing affects a large number of people on this island and will be greatly missed.
Let’s celebrate his time with us and all the memories of a person who touched all our lives. PA, thank you!
