Brief: Public Works Collecting Bulk Waste on St. John This Week

Jan. 12, 2009 — This is the week to drag out all those old appliances, furniture and other metal and bulk waste for pickup by the Public Works Department.
"It's to beautify the island," said St. John Administrator Leona Smith. Her office organized the cleanup in conjunction with Public Works.
Pickups are scheduled for Tuesday in the Coral Bay area and Wednesday in the Cruz Bay area. Both will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Residents must bring their bulk waste to the main road.
"We're not picking up on estate roads," said Ira Wade, deputy Public Works commissioner.
The Coral Bay area runs east and south from Bordeaux. The Cruz Bay area runs west from Bordeaux to Cruz Bay, but Wade said most of the houses are located west of Catherineberg. The Cruz Bay area also includes Fish Bay, Chocolate Hole, Great Cruz Bay and other areas along the South Shore.
Residents unable to put their bulk waste along the main road Tuesday and Wednesday should call Smith's office to make alternate arrangements for pickup.
While Wade said it has been about a year since the last pickup, Smith said other pickups will be scheduled on an as-needed basis.
Although Wade has repeatedly asked residents not to drop bulk waste at the island's Dumpster, people continue to do so, he said. However, crews pick those items up every day. He again asked that people take their bulk waste to the Susannaberg landfill.
The landfill is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. It's open 7:30 a.m. to noon Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
