V.I. Energy Office Extends Deadline for Grants

April 24, 2008 — The Virgin Islands Energy Office is extending the deadline for this cycle of its Discretionary Grant Program until May 1; applications are due by 5 p.m.
Grants are available in four areas: education mini-grants, energy education outreach, building retrofit grants, and solar outdoor lighting. The deadline for this round had been previously set for April 18.
Mini education grants for $1,500 and major grants in the amount of $20,000 will be awarded to complete education outreach, building retrofit, and solar outdoor lighting. All major grants, except the mini-grants, require a 20 percent or $4,000 match. Applications may be picked up at the V.I.E.O., 45 Estate Mars Hill on St. Croix, or at the Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas.
The grants are funded through Stripper Well Restitution Funds. Many churches and schools have taken advantages of them in previous years, but all non-profit organizations are eligible to make application for them, according to Bevan R. Smith, director of the Energy Office.
The mission of V.I.E.O. is to promote energy efficiency and advocate the use of renewable energy technology for the public and private sectors through energy education, outreach, financial incentives and technical assistance. The grant programs were designed to assist community groups, civic organizations, schools and institutions, and local government agencies/departments in successfully implementing energy efficiency and renewable energy projects.
