Emergency Team Responds to Leaking Container Alert

July 29, 2007 – Personnel from the territory's emergency response teams were on the job Monday morning after receiving a report that a container at Tropical Shipping was leaking an ammonia-based substance.
According to Government House spokesman Jean Greaux, there is no threat to the public.
He said the appropriate agencies were working to determine the exact substance in question and to make sure it did not get into the water supply, "because of the proximity to WAPA (Water and Power Authority)."
He said the call came in at 10:30 a.m. about the problem, though it was suspected the container had been leaking since Saturday night.
It is unknown who the shipper was, only that it came in through Tropical, which is located in Gregerie Channel between Charlotte Amalie harbor and Crown Bay.
A media briefing will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday at V.I. Territorial Emergency Management Agency headquarters.
"Representatives from the response agencies will be on hand to provide a complete assessment of the situation and the response that has been staged," according to a release sent early Monday afternoon.
Greaux said along with VITEMA, the other agencies involved in the response included Planning and Natural Resources, Homeland Security and V.I. Police Department.
