Holiday Energy-Saving Tips from WAPA

Dec. 14, 2004 – As Virgin Islands residents and business owners string lights and prepare for the holidays, the V.I. Water and Power Authority has some tips to help save its customers dollars on their energy bills.
Replace larger bulb Christmas tree lights with mini lights. They use up to 50 percent less energy than larger lights and last 65 percent longer. Repair or replace sockets, plugs or cords that look defective.

Run outdoor lights on a timer pre-set for three to five hours to save energy. Consider using energy saving halogen bulb flood lights in different colors for a festive outdoor look. Turn lights off when no one is around to enjoy them. When retiring for the evening, reduce costs by unplugging all lights at the wall outlet.

Icicle lights have more lights per linear foot than regular light strands and use more energy. Instead, use mirrors or tinsel around indoor lights to heighten their effect.

Light emitting diode (LED) lights have extremely low energy use and very long lives. They may cost a bit more but the cost is offset by energy savings and reduced hassles of bulb replacements.

When doing holiday cooking use your microwave oven often as it uses up to 75% less energy than conventional ovens. When using conventional ovens don’t open the door to peek at what’s cooking as it lowers the temperature inside, increases cooking time, and wastes energy. Keep your refrigerator and freezer well stocked. A full refrigerator or freezer saves energy by reducing the recovery time when the door is opened.

WAPA also encourages its customers to stay safe. Do not overload electrical circuits. Only use UL or FM labeled extension cords. Do not place lights in trees near power lines. Never use electric lights on old metal artificial trees and keep all light strings out of the reach of small children.

The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority wishes its customers a safe and blessed holiday season.
