Dec. 2, 2004 — Sen. Louis Hill, chairman of the Committee on Planning and Environmental Protection, is reminding the general public, architects, builders, contractors and any interested persons about free workshops Dec. 6 and 7 on St. Thomas, where information will be provided on conventional septic systems, alternative septic systems, including local regulatory update and review. The workshop is being sponsored by the University of the Virgin Islands Cooperative Extension Service in coordination with the Consortium of Institutes for Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Cooperative Extension Outreach Program to EPA Region II.
"Improperly functioning septic systems represent a real and immediate health problem.
They discharge directly into the bedrock then into the groundwater, and overland into surface water, threatening coastal eco-systems and polluting recreational areas," Hill said in a release.
The training is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, at the Small Business Development Center, Nisky. The first day is geared toward regulators and educators; the second day is for architects, builders and the general public.
