Marines Fund-Raiser Features Hot Golfers

Oct. 10, 2004 – Over 80 golfers enjoyed 18 holes at Carambola Golf Course Sunday while raising funds to buy toys for needy children this Christmas.
"This is the third time we have participated," Kiran Allen, who works as comptroller at the Tamarind Reef Hotel, said. "It is a great charity. They buy brand-new toys for children."
She and her husband Douglas played golf, had lunch, and, even though they did not win any of the many door prizes given away and the course was hot with barely a breeze, said the day was very enjoyable.
The Marine Corps Toys for Tots Golf Tournament was a family affair for many, with young children joining their parents in foursome. But there were some serious foursomes too.
The first-place team in the best-ball scramble was D. Veret, E. Barton, C. Griffin and R. Boutte. After handicaps were deducted, they came in with a score of 52.
The second-place team was R. Mooney, T. McDaniel, K. Heaverly, and J. Reid. The prize for the men's longest drive went to T. Julich. D. Smith hit the ladies' longest drive. Closet to the pin awards went for men to R. Boutte and for woman G. Angus.
The lowest Marine foursome was P. Ross, T. Sharpe, I. Files and M. Robbins.
"As usual it was a great success, thanks to all the great support of St. Croix business people," said organizer Carl Gotts. Gotts, a Marine veteran and executive director of the St. Croix Marine Corps Association, has been organizing the tournament for nine years,
Cormorant Beach Club gave a $100 gift certificate for a raffle prize. Giving two $50 certificates was Restaurant Bacchus. Cheeseburgers in Paradise also gave a $50 certificate; Olympic Rent a Car gave a car rental and StX Ultimate Bluewater Adventure gave dive lessons.
There were about 25 prizes total. Organizers wanted to call attention to the donation of a scooter by Western Auto. An organizer said, "And they were so excited. When I stopped by to get the donation, they said, 'we have been waiting for you. We have a special prize for you.'"
Gotts said the fund-raiser last year earned enough to purchase $5,700 worth of toys, and he expected, after all the bills are paid, that this year's net will be at least a couple hundred dollars more than that.
The tournament is the main fund-raising event for the Toys for Tots campaign. Toys For Tots is a U.S. Marine Corps tradition now in its 58th year distributing over seven million toys nationwide each Christmas season.
All the money raised at Carambola will go to buying toys for St. Croix Children.
