June 24, 2004 – A young Crucian heroine, Sophia Johnson, is scheduled to receive the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Unsung Hero Award on Saturday in Washington, D.C.
Delegate to Congress Donna M. Christensen chose this young lady to receive this year's award because of her bravery and courage. Sophia rescued a 4-year-old tourist from drowning on August 29, 2003. After she retrieved Alissa from the water, Sophia started to pray over this little girl and fortunately her prayers were answered and the life of this little girl was spared, a release said.
Sophia Johnson, the daughter of Robert and Sandra Johnson of St. Croix, is currently an 8-year-old fourth-grade student at the Randolph Lockhardt School. In her spare time she enjoys swimming, singing, reading and meeting people. She is best described as an outspoken braveheart who trusts in God to help her in all her endeavors, according to the release. Sophia's trip is sponsored by Avant Garde and Terry's Children's Wear.
Annually the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Spouses Organization, of which the delegate's husband, Christian "Olie" Christensen, is chairman, holds various activities geared towards the goal of raising funds for scholarships and internships for young people across the country. The Unsung Heroes Award Dinner is one of the major fund-raising activities of the Spouses Weekend, which also includes a Gospel Brunch and a golf and tennis tournament. Winners over the years include Alvis Christian of St. John, the Hoop Brothers of St. Thomas and Mr. And Mrs. O'Neal Henderson of St. Croix. Over the years, more than $25,000 in support has been awarded to young people in the territory.
