Summer Institute for Future Global Leaders Brings 49 Participants to UVI
Welcome to participants in UVI's Summer Institute for Future Global Leaders on the St. Thomas campus. This year, 49 participants, representing 21 colleges and universities from the United States and the Caribbean, are in attendance. Institute seminars, events and activities will continue through June 6.
Starfest Featured Each Monday on WTJX-TV
The Virgin Islands' best singers and dancers are featured each Monday in STARfest on WTJX Public Television. The 8 p.m. program includes highlights from past STARfests and is offered in collaboration with UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts.
UVI Nursing Workshop to Feature Author and Educator on May 26-27
The nursing education division on the UVI St. Croix campus will host a two-day workshop for educators that will focus on cultural diversity among students and working with disadvantaged students. The workshop is geared toward UVI faculty and other teaching professionals and will be held in building Q, Room 100, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 26, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 27. NLM Course on Free Online Health Resources Slated May 27
A one-day course designed to acquaint the V.I. community with the medical and environmental health resources offered by the National Library of Medicine will be held on UVI's St. Thomas campus from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 27.
Hosted by UVI's Education Division, the workshop will feature an introduction to searching the NLM's free medical, toxicological and environmental health databases as well as other Internet-based resources. The course includes hands-on computer practice as well as lectures. Information on hazardous chemicals will also be included. Experienced professionals from the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education in Oak Ridge, Tenn., will conduct the course. Space is limited. Interested persons should call 693-1290 or 693-1291 to register or for more information. The National Library of Medicine is part of the National Institutes of Health.
CLEP Test Signup Deadline is May 28 on St. Thomas, St. Croix
May 28 is the deadline for UVI students who wish sign-up for CLEP (College Level Examination Program) tests to be conducted on June 24 on UVI's St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. CLEP tests are offered in a wide variety of subject areas, including Spanish, French, history, accounting, business administration, computer information systems, chemistry, biology, math, literature, sociology, psychology and others.
To sign up on St. Thomas, students must visit the enrollment management office on the second floor of the Classroom Administration building. For more information call 693-1152. To sign up on St. Croix, visit the academic services office in Room 811 of the Evans Center. For details on St. Croix call 692-4158.
UVI Extends Deadline for Admissions Applications Until May 30
UVI has announced the extension of the deadline for the submission of applications for admissions through Sunday, May 30.
All interested persons are encouraged to apply. Individuals are asked to submit a completed admissions packet to the university's admissions office promptly. This packet should include the following:
1. a UVI admissions application;
2. an official high school and/or college transcript(s) or official GED verification;
3. official GCE, CXC or CAPE results, if applicable;
4. official SAT or ACT results, for undergraduate applicants, or GMAT results for potential MBA and MPA graduate applicants; and
5. a $25 (US) check or money order.

Youth Moviemaking Workshop Applications Available; Deadline is June 4
UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts is again offering its innovative Youth Moviemaking Workshop to increase the film/video literacy of young people in the Virgin Islands. Individuals between the ages of 12-18 interested in moviemaking are encouraged to apply for the program by June 4. The program is open to 20 students. The workshop will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays from June 21 through August 7. St. Croix students are encouraged to participate. Math Skills Testing Scheduled June 8 on St. Thomas Campus
Math Skills diagnostic and placement testing on the St. Thomas campus is scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, in the Classroom Administration Building Rooms 305 and 306. All entering students (new to UVI) with SAT-math scores below 490 should take this test to determine appropriate enrollment for their first mathematics course. All students who take the test must bring photo ID.
Summer Session Registration Set June 10-11; Classes Begin June 14
Registration for UVI's 2004 Summer Session is scheduled for Thursday, June 10, and Friday, June 11. Summer Session will begin Monday, June 14.
Grant-Writing Seminar Set August 12-13; Application Deadline is June 5
A grant-writing seminar sponsored by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology/Minority Access to Research Careers program will be offered at UVI on August 12 and 13. The two-day seminar — which will originate on the St. Thomas campus and be teleconferenced to the St. Croix campus — is designed to help investigators achieve their full potential in research by providing them with grant-writing skills that are necessary to maximize their abilities to generate novel ideas, and to communicate those ideas effectively to grant review panels.
Conducted in association with Grant Writers' Seminars and Workshops, LCC, the seminar will be funded through the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, National Institutes of Health under the FASEB Visiting Scientists for Minority Institutions Program. UVI-CELL Announces Massage Therapy, Half-Day Real Estate Courses
UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning Center offers courses designed for individuals seeking new careers and professional advancement, or those who want to explore a hobby or leisure-time activities.
The most recent additions to CELL offerings include a Massage Therapy course, and two half-day, follow-on courses to the Real Estate Salespersons course. See descriptions below. All are offered on St. Thomas.

Introduction to Massage Therapy
Introduction to Massage Therapy is for residents of St. Thomas, St. John and Water Island. This hands-on course is designed to explore the art of massage therapy for personal benefit. Students will learn techniques of Swedish massage, the benefits and limitations of massage therapy and more. The course will be offered 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturdays from June 12 through August 21. The $475 fee includes textbooks. Classes will be held in the Recreation Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus.
Real Estate Broker's Course
This half-day course provides what individuals need to prepare for the brokers exam. Note: Any person who wishes to take the exam must be a licensed real estate sales agent for at least two years.
Date: Saturday, June 5; Time: 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.; Fee: $50; Location: T101 – St. Thomas.
"Becoming an Appraiser" Course
An introductory course that provides insight into what it takes to become an Appraiser.
