JOGGER JAM ON ST. THOMAS TO BE FEB. 22

Feb. 12, 2004 – The Women's Jogger Jam, which takes place each year under the direction of the St. Thomas Association of Roadrunners, will have a small change this year – a new date. The females-only event, which normally took place in March, will occur on Feb. 22.
"We're trying to do it the cooler time of the year, "The Fruit Bowl manager David Goldberg said Wednesday. "Hopefully, this will bring out more people." The Fruit Bowl is the sole sponsor of the women's event, providing refreshments afterwards and also trophies for the different winners in each age group.
"We've been sponsoring it for over 20 years now," Goldberg said. The event, he added, is "more than just a race." Proceeds from the race will be donated to the Family Resource Center. The Fruit Bowl will donate $5 for every registered participant who finishes the two-mile run, Goldberg said. There were 331 starters at last year's event.
This is the second year that the Family Resource Center will benefit from the event. Previously, the event served as a fund-raiser for the V.I. Victim Advocates, which closed its doors in December of 2002.
The Women's Jogger Jam will begin at 5 p.m. with runners and walkers making their way from The Fruit Bowl over to the course beginning the Roy L. Schneider Hospital, toward Fortress Storage, around past the Lockhart Elementary School and back by the hospital. Participants go around the course twice to be counted as a finisher.
Early registration fee is $3 for those 18 and under, $4 for STAR members and $5 for adults. Registration deadline is Feb. 22. Those who register on the day of the event will be charged $10 per person. To pre-register, visit The Fruit Bowl.
