Feb. 9, 2004 – Residents of the Estate Mafolie area near Joseph Sibilly Elementary School are concerned about the proposed construction of three buildings to house six family units across from the school grounds.
"The residents of that area are concerned about the high density that will develop," Sen. Lorraine Berry said on Monday. Some 50 to 60 families now reside in the area near the proposed construction site, she said.
The 1.7 acres of land on which the buildings are to be constructed faces a small private road. According to one resident of the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, "The concern is that there will be a lot of parking on that private road."
The individual also said that she and other residents are concerned that the construction project will be in "violation of the governance of the area."
The Planning and Natural Resources Department has not yet approved a permit for the construction. A public hearing on the matter is scheduled for 10 a.m. Feb. 19 at the DPNR offices on the second floor of the Cyril E. King Airport terminal.
Berry asked residents of the area attend and voice their concerns.
