THE YEAR 2003 AT MAHO BAY

Jan. 30, 2004 – The year 2003 was an eventful year for everyone and certainly for Maho Bay, Harmony and Concordia.
In December, we opened a new, redesigned Web site, where guests can leave comments and pictures for other site visitors to see and where it is a lot easier to make reservations online.
The Trash to Treasures program of recycling paper, glass, aluminum and wood has been expanded.
Glass and pottery art/craft objects are now for sale in a new "200sf" art gallery right by the pavilion.
In November, a new HUB Consolidated 175-pound crucible for melting used beer and soda bottles was installed in the glass studio at the Maho Bay Art Center.
It is three times bigger than the old one.
An Innovative Eco-responsible Kiln Installed
In keeping with its longstanding commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship, Maho Bay Camps installed a low-energy kiln that runs on pallet wood. Based on Frederick Olsen's Fast Fire prototype, which was developed during the 1970s, the new kiln is used to fire pottery crafted during the ongoing art workshops offered at the resort. The first firing was in April.
The newly expanded pottery studio in the Maho Bay Art Center now has 12 potters' wheels, six electric and six kick wheels.
U.S. EPA Environmental Quality Award
Maho Bay Camps was selected to receive a 2003 U.S. EPA Environmental Quality Award. The Environmental Quality Award is the highest recognition presented to the public by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Each year, the Agency searches for those who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to protecting and enhancing environmental quality. Award recipients are selected from all sectors of the community, including nonprofit, environmental, and community groups, individual citizens, environmental education and business organizations and members of the news media. What pleases us about this award is that is not from a travel or tourism organization but the environmental universe at large.
The Year in Magazines Awarding, Praising Maho Bay
— January 's Travel Holiday Magazine names Maho Editors' Choice: The editors of Travel Holiday were so very impressed by the outstanding value provided that Maho Bay Camps was a winner of Travel Holiday magazine's Editors' Choice Award for the Best Buys of 2003. The picture showing "Tenting on the campgrounds at Maho Bay" is actually a picture of a Concordia Eco-tent overlooking Salt Pond Bay. But don't fear, it is not misleading: Concordia is also an excellent destination for a family reunion.
