Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital is feting nurses and hospital professionals with ceremonies, awards and educational sessions this week, joining the American Nurses Association and the American Hospital Association in celebrating Nurses and Hospital Week.
“The nursing profession has been supported and promoted by the American Nurses Association since 1896,” according to a statement from Dr. Kendall Griffith, the hospital’s interim chief executive officer. “Each of ANA’s state and territorial nurses associations promotes the nursing profession at the state and regional levels and each conducts celebrations on these dates to recognize the many contributions nurses make to the community,” Griffith said.
Nurses Week is May 6 to 12. Hospital Week is May 11 to 17.
The observance of Hospital Week originally began as a day set aside in honor of the woman who made nursing a respectable profession and who revolutionized the way hospitals were run. However, the May 12 observance was expanded to a weeklong event in 1953 so that hospitals could use it to plan and implement more extensive public information programs. Hospital Week is also sponsored by the American Hospital Association and it provides an opportunity to recognize employee achievements, to educate the community about the services hospitals offer, and to keep the public up to date on technological advances in the health care field.
