On Tuesday, the Virgin Islands Davis Cup team played Costa Rica, the top seed of our group and the second ranked team at the competition.
Brian Oldfield the Virgin Islands number one player was matched up against Mauricio Feoli, Costa Rica’s number one player. In the first set, initially, they both held serve and exchanged service breaks in games three and four. Unfortunately Brian was unable to hold serve in the sixth game falling 2-4. They both held serve the remainder of the set but Brian lost the first set 6-3. During the second set, Brian played well but was unable to save serve or break his opponent, losing the set 6-0.
Nick Bass played Sebastian Vidal. Nick gave him a run for his money. He started slow and was down 1-4 but came back to hold server and broke back. Unfortunately, he was broken in the next game and the opponent served out the set winning the first set 6-3. During the second set, Nick was able to hold his serve the first two times around, however was broken in games 5 and 7. His opponent served out the match winning the set 6-2.
Both Brian and Nick played hard and there were several close games during their, match but the breaks went to the opponent.
Alric Plaskett and Nick Bass represented the USVI team in the doubles match. They got off to a slow start and were broken three times before breaking back. Costa Rica then served out the match, winning 6-2. The second set was similar, with Costa Rica winning 6-1.
Kristepher Elien was out of the line up due to a sprained knee. He was treated by the trainers. His participation when we play Panama on Wednesday will be dependent on his ability to play at game time.
The members of this USVI Davis Cup Tennis team continue to play hard and show tremendous support for each other.
The V.I.’s next opponent will be Panama.
