St. Croix Central High School wrapped up its Junior Varsity Basketball Tournament Sunday afternoon with the Host Caribs taking the boys championship from John Woodson Junior high 46-36, and Bertha C. Boschulte of St. Thomas taking the Girls championship over the host lady Caribs in a 33-30 barn burner.
Caribs 46, Woodson 36
In the boys finals the host Central Caribs got all they could handle from the John Woodson Junior high boys, but in the end experience prevailed as the Caribs used a 30-20 second-half advantage to pull out the victory.
The first quarter was much closer than most would expect, and although the Caribs led 16-13 at the end of the period it was obvious that they were going to be in a dogfight with the young men from Woodson. Stephaun Adams knocked down a pair of three-pointers to keep his team close. He finished with eight in the quarter.
The second was a defensive struggle, and only three points was scored in the period, which came on a long three by Adams, knotting the score at 16 as the teams headed into the locker room at the half.
The Caribs, after failing to score in the second period, outscored Woodson 13-8 in the third quarter behind six points from Razeem Huggins, and they would take the lead for good at 29-24 after three quarters.
John Woodson had no quit in them in the fourth quarter but the host Caribs’ experience and depth proved to be the difference down the stretch as they won the period 17-12 for a final score of 46-36.
The Caribs were led offensively by Huggins, who netted a game-high 15 points; he was ably supported by teammate Shomari Francis who dropped in 12.
For Woodson, Adams finished with a team-high 14 points that included four from beyond the arc. Turrel Thomas chipped in with eight points and two other players had six apiece.
BCB 33, CHS 30
In the girls championship, Bertha Boschulte of St. Thomas surprised the host lady Caribs 33-30 to take the crown across the waters. BCB, riding the hot hand of Jerusha Corbett who scored 12 of her game high 16 points after intermission, was able to outscore the Lady Caribs 20-17 in winning the hard-fought championship, 33-30.
Corbett top scored for the winners with 16 points, and Akia Frett chipped in with seven. For CHS Kagesha Barry netted a team-high 12, and Tiniqua Niles chipped in with seven points in a losing effort.
