Oct. 5, 2007 Alexander's Bella Blu in Frenchtown presents the "The School of Visual Arts and Careers (SVAC) Annual Student Art Show," an exhibit of original watercolors, mixed media, linoleum prints, acrylic paintings and pastels completed within the year by students enrolled in the non-profit after school and summer program. The show opens with a meet-the-artists reception from 5-7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 19.
Over 50 artworks created by 12 students of SVAC are presented in the 2007 show. The individual students receive the proceeds from the sale of their work, with prices ranging from $50 to $250. A special feature of the show is the pieces inspired by the students' studies of cave paintings from around the world and also from the Arawak and Carib Indian petroglyphs.
The program has provided hundreds of students from the Virgin Islands the artistic and professional experience required for admission into art programs in colleges and universities in the United States and abroad. Students attend the program after school from 3:30 to 5:30 Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Participating students for the 2007 show come from Addelita Cancryn Jr. High, Antilles, Charlotte Amalie High School, and Ivanna Eudora Kean High School. Students or parents of students interested in the program are encouraged to attend the opening reception or contact Program Director Phebe Schwartz Davis. The exhibit is open to the public and will run for one month through Nov. 15.
