July 25, 2007 — The V.I. Law Enforcement Planning Commission (LEPC) has received three grants from the U.S. Department of Justice totaling $755,087, according to the office of Delegate Donna M. Christensen.
The first grant for $25,075 will be used for the fiscal year 2007 Title V community-prevention grants program. The program aims to reduce risks and enhance protective factors to prevent at-risk youth from entering the juvenile-justice systems and to intervene with first-time and non-serious offenders to keep them out of the system.
The second grant for $102,488 will be go to the fiscal year 2007 juvenile accountability block grants program. The program is designed to reduce juvenile crimes through accountability-based programs focused on both the juvenile offender and the juvenile-justice system.
The third grant for $627,524 will be used for the STOP violence against women formula grant program, according to a news release from Christensens office. This program continues to encourage the development and implementation of effective, victim-centered law enforcement, prosecution and court strategies to address violent crimes against women and the development and enhancement of victim services in cases involving violent crimes against women.
