FUVI Celebrity Golf Classic Scheduled for June 8-11 on St. Croix
Virgin Islands golfers, as well as the general public, are invited to join in the fun at the Second Annual Foundation for the University of the Virgin Islands' (FUVI) Celebrity Golf Classic scheduled for June 8 through 11 on St. Croix. Golf Classic events take place at the Carambola Golf Course, the Buccaneer Hotel, UVI's St. Croix campus and the Divi Carina Bay Casino. More than 20 actors, professional athletes and TV personalities will participate.
Free youth sports clinics in football and golf are set for 3 p.m. on Friday, June 9. Call UVI at 692-4023 to sign up for the football clinic on the St. Croix campus. Call the Carambola at 778-5638 to register for the golf clinic.
Area golfers are invited to play with the celebrities at the tournament which begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 10, at the Carambola. Early sign-up — through the Carambola or UVI's Office of Institutional Advancement at 693-1040 — costs $115 per player. At-the-door registration is $125 per player. UVI Sophomores Qualify for Boston University Medical Program
UVI sophomores Shanedelle Norford and Malori Callender have been selected to enter the University of the Virgin Islands' Boston University Early Medical School Selection Program. Norford and Callender will each attend Boston University this summer and will return to UVI in the fall. Currently, there are eight UVI students at various stages of the program. The May issue of the monthly newsletter Dateline: UVI is now available on the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu. The issue includes a story and photos from UVI's commencement ceremonies on St. Thomas and St. Croix, a preview of the Second Annual FUVI Celebrity Golf classic and photos of UVI participants in Carnival 2006.
UVI Alumni Association to Honor Nursing Pioneers on June 3
The University of the Virgin Islands Alumni Association St. Thomas-St. John chapter will hold its Fourth Annual Alumni Recognition Awards Breakfast honoring five dynamic women who have made outstanding contributions to the nursing profession. The breakfast will be held 8:30 a.m., June 3, 2006, at Pilgrim's Terrace Restaurant. Honorees will include Mariga Rosetta Fleming, Rona E. Relay for Life Team Meeting Slated for June 6
Members of UVI's 2006 Relay for Life team on St. Thomas will meet at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6, in room 200 of the Humanities building. Team organizer Dr. Patricia Harkins-Pierre urges all team members to attend. She also welcomed members of the UVI community interested in forming a second UVI team or those who wish to provide financial support. Relay for Life is an annual fund raising event for the American Cancer Society. It is scheduled for June 24-25 at the Charlotte Amalie High School track. The Relay is designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs conducted by the American Cancer Society. For details, contact Harkins-Pierre at 693-1357.
SBDC Sets Seminar on ADA Compliance for Small Businesses on June 7
A seminar designed to assist small businesses to comply with provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7, at UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. The seminar is being sponsored by the SBDC in collaboration with the Virgin Islands University Center of Excellence for Developmental Disabilities. Presenter Wilbert Francis will discuss how local businesses can take a proactive approach to ADA compliance. Admission is $20 at the door. A 50 percent discount is available to individuals who pre-register. UVI students, staff, and faculty with proper ID will be admitted free. Pre-registration, however, is required. Pesticide Safety Training Set for St. Thomas, St. Croix in June
UVI's Cooperative Extension Service will hold free sessions in Core Pesticide Safety Education Training for commercial and private applicators in June. On the St. Thomas campus, the training is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 7 at the Cooperative Extension Service (New House) Building. On the St. Croix campus, the training is slated for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 14 in room 139 of the Research and Extension Center. Registration is required. 'Seas of Change' Documents the Struggle to Restore VI Fisheries
A half-hour documentary on the efforts of Virgin Islands fishermen, researchers from the University of the Virgin Islands and environmental groups to preserve and restore the region's fisheries will be broadcast on TV2 at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 8. "Seas of Change: Spawning Aggregations in the Virgin Islands" was produced by The Nature Conservancy, The Ocean Conservancy and UVI in association with Friday's Films. UVI Student Art Exhibit Continues Through June 9
Paintings and drawings by UVI students are on exhibit at the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts building through June 9. Instructors Susan Edwards and Shanda Chiumento coordinated the exhibit. It is sponsored by the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts and UVI's Humanities and Social Science Division. The Arts Council building, located at 41-42 Norre Gade in Charlotte Amalie, is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. For details, call 774-5984.
Reichhold Center for the Arts: June Schedule
Saturday, June 3 — 7 p.m. — Students of the Caribbean Dance Performance presented by the Caribbean Dance School. Tickets are $10 and are available from parents.
