The St. Thomas-St. John Federation of Teachers paid tribute Sunday to scores of people who have made significant contributions to the well-being of young people here.
The ceremony marked the 10th anniversary of the Feddy Awards, and the teachers' union honored 79 nominees in 10 categories.
The AFT Youth Humanitarian Award went to Doris Thomas-Smith, according to a report by Radio One.
The finalists in each category were:
— Business: Glen Nelthropp
— Religious: Irose Payne
— Educational: Sen. Lorraine Berry
— Social/Civic: Millicent Carpenter
— Family: Roxie Venzen
— Culture/Art: Karen Samuel
— Peer: Mansa Musa Smith
— Governmental: Sen. Judy M. Gomez
— Athletic: Doris L. Thomas-Smith
Lt. Gov. Gerard Luz James II stood in as acting governor at the ceremony. He praised the nominees for their efforts in serving the youth and the community.
Education Commissioner Ruby Simmonds said there is excellence to be found in the territory’s classrooms, according to the Radio One report.
Senate President Vargrave Richards, along with Sens. Gomez and Berry, also made remarks praising the nominees. U.S. Attorney James Hurd gave the keynote address.
