April 2, 2004 – A Senate committee hearing on the proposed Commercial Motor Vehicle Act of 2004 that was scheduled for Friday evening on St. Thomas was postponed earlier in the day.
The meeting of the Public Safety, Judiciary, Homeland Security and Justice Committee was rescheduled for 6 p.m. April 13 because of the illness of its chair, Sen. Lorraine Berry.
The proposed legislation, introduced by Sen. Usie Richards at the request of the Police Department, seeks to enforce the regulation of trucks and other commercial vehicles.
Richards' chief of staff, Richard Muhammad, said on Friday afternoon that the intent of the act is "to ensure uniform inspection practices and to improve highway safety" under the terms of the Motor Vehicle Inspection Act of 2003.
Invited to testify on Friday were Police Commissioner Elton Lewis; Lt. William Harvey; Barbara McIntosh, Public Safety Division administrator; other Police Department representatives and representatives of the St. Thomas taxi and trucking sectors.
The hearing was the second of three on this week's legislative calendar to be postponed. The Education and Youth Committee met as scheduled on Monday. A meeting of the Finance Committee which was set for Tuesday was postponed, also to April 13, the first government work day following the Easter weekend holidays.
