Oct. 24, 2005 – It was classic old St John, "Love City" Saturday night at Miss Lucy's when the Rotary Club of St John paid tribute to three special people of St John. About 60 guests enjoyed good food, good music and fellowship as Excellence in Vocational Service Awards were presented to Mr Avelino Samuel for his woodworking skill and energy in teaching woodcraft to both the children and adults of the St John community. Officer Steven Payne was recognized for his leadership and success bringing youths to music in the Juvenile Delinquent Prevention Program. Both men were accompanied by family and friends as they received the awards from Rotary along with citations of the occasion from Senator Shawn Michael Malone. Senator-at-Large Craig Barshinger was in attendance and added his "salute".
The Rotary Club also presented Mr Guy Benjamin with the honor of Paul Harris Fellow. The fellowship is named after the founder of Rotary International and expresses appreciation for a contribution of $1,000 to the humanitarian and educational programs of The Rotary Foundation in his name. Mr Benjamin's life demonstrates a shared purpose with the objectives of The Rotary Foundation to build world understanding and peace. Mr Benjamin was surrounded by friends as they sang "Happy Birthday" celebrating his 92nd birthday, and he then sang his "Thank you" to the group, noting that this was his fourth birthday celebration this year and he was considering not doing it again until his 95th.
Rotarian Steve Simon and Sally Smith kept the audience entertained with their great song stylings, while Rotarian Ronnie Lockhart served as Master of Ceremonies, and Miss Lucy's staff insured that no one went away hungry.
