Minor Charged After Alleged Smith Bay Carjacking

A minor has been charged in connection with an alleged carjacking that left a woman injured Saturday night in Smith Bay on St. Thomas, according to the Virgin Islands Police Department.

Officers were dispatched at approximately 9:05 p.m. Saturday to Chester’s Chicken in Smith Bay following a report of a carjacking, according to a VIPD police report.

Police said the victim reported that an unknown male unlocked her vehicle door and dragged her from the car while she was seated inside. The suspect then allegedly drove over the victim’s legs as he fled in the vehicle, causing injuries to both legs.

Officers later intercepted the vehicle on Raphune Hill and determined the suspect was a minor, according to the report. The minor was transported to Roy Lester Schneider Hospital for treatment of injuries and, upon release, was booked, processed and placed in custody.

The minor was charged with assault in the first degree, unauthorized use of a vehicle and leaving the scene of an accident, police said.

The investigation remains ongoing.
