The Virgin Islands Department of Agriculture informs the community that after a necessary hiatus to focus on key maintenance concerns, the St. Croix Abattoir has been approved as operable and is ready to serve the public.
During the temporary closure, Director of the Abattoir Curleen Rogers focused heavily on machinery maintenance and parts replacement. The efforts of repair contractor Winston Greenidge, the abattoir team including butcher Anthony Brown, and the Land Development maintenance team led by Director Victor Murray and Assistant Director Orlando Melendez, were and are essential in maintaining a serviceable abattoir.
The USVI Department of Agriculture is carefully enthusiastic about the reopening of its St. Croix Abattoir after their tireless efforts.
Commissioner Nominee Louis E. Petersen, Ph.D., a staunch advocate for making efficient and effective choices to improve the Department of Agriculture’s operations, expressed his relief that the St. Croix Abattoir can once again serve the community.
“I would like to extend my deep appreciation to Mr. Greenidge, who led the efforts in reopening the abattoir, and our hardworking staff, without whom we would have no abattoir,” he said. “I am also grateful to our farmers and the public in general for their patience as we improve our facilities, not forgetting those requiring attention on St. Thomas and St. John. We are continuously pursuing the resources required to make all necessary improvements.
“In the meantime, we will focus on maintenance and consistency, making all efforts to keep our St. Croix Abattoir doors open,” Petersen said.
