The Rotary Club of St. Croix West along with the Rotary Club of Port Antonio, Jamaica, joined together in a tree planting project. The event took place on the Albert Sheen Campus at the University of the Virgin Islands on St. Croix. A lignum vitae tree was planted as a “peace tree” in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations, which was Oct. 24, 2020.

The lignum vitae tree is the official tree of Jamaica, and it was planted to replace one that was lost after Hurricane Maria in 2017. A total of $500 was transmitted from Jamaica to aid in the completion of this project.

President Cheru Ross of the Rotary Club of St. Croix West said that “… as the tree grows, she hopes that it would provide shade and an area for students to study and enjoy the peace of nature.” By planting more trees, it will contribute to the global cultivation efforts and benefit the environment because trees help to absorb carbon dioxide and also release oxygen back into the air.

The Rotary Club of St. Croix West meets at 6 p.m., every Tuesday, at the Rotary West Community Center in Frederiksted.
