V.I. Track Star’s Olympic Performance Reaps Dividends

Laverne Jones-Ferrette had her best Olympic performance ever in the 100m and 200m races advancing her to the semi-finals at the 2012 Games, and her placing so high paved the way for numerous invitations from European meet directors.

Jones-Ferrette is taking advantage of the opportunity. She stepped to the 100m race line in the historic city of Linz, Austria, on Aug. 19. She finished third in the race on the bank of the Danube River with a time 11.24, behind Samantha Henry-Robinson of Jamaica in 11.15 and Gloria Asumnu of Nigeria in 11.19.

The Linz meet attracted other Olympic stars including Kriani James of Grenada and Felix Sanchez of Dominican Republic.

A look back on Jones-Ferrette’s career revealed that she first broke the V.I. national record in the 100m with an 11.25 in May 2004 in Texas. She broke her own record with 11.24 in Belgium in 2008; and in 2009 she broke that record in the Netherlands with a time of 11.13.

Her most recent performance at the London Olympic Games saw Jones-Ferrette establish another new V.I record with a time of 11.07 in.

And she accomplished all this a year after giving birth to her daughter Asana.

Jones-Ferrette is well-liked and appreciated in Europe where track and field meets regularly draw thousands of fans nightly on the circuit.

After the outdoor season she will most likely prepare for the indoor season and then the IAAF World Championships which will be held in Moscow, Russia, in August 2013.

The Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation would like to announce that all V.I. National Track and Field Team members interested in competing in the IAAF World Championships should register with the VITFF and expect to receive the qualifying standards as soon as they are announced by the IAAF.
