Veterans Experts to Visit V.I. Vets

Two experts on veterans’ health benefits will be in the U.S. Virgin Islands beginning Thursday to meet with local vets and explain the services available to them, according to the V.I. Office of Veterans Affairs.

Dr. Ivette Freytes and Dr. Connie Uphold of the North Florida-South Georgia Veterans Health System will be in the territory through Tuesday, meeting veterans and their families and distributing booklets explaining the services available, according to a news release issued by the office.

This is the doctors’ second such trip to the islands. They visited the territory two years ago, meeting both veterans and service providers who serve veterans and their families.

“Our motto is ‘serving those who served,’ and this visit by doctors Freytes and Uphold gives us a chance to do just that – help veterans understand what benefits are available to them and how to access them,” said Harry Daniel, assistant director of the V.I. Office of Veterans Affairs.

The services presented, which are available to all of the territory’s veterans, will be based on local providers.

The meetings will be held:

– 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Patrick U. George American Legion Post 90 in Sub Base, St. Thomas;
– 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Leonard B. Francis Armory in Estate Nazareth, St. Thomas;
– 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Myron G. Danielson American Legion Post 85 in Christiansted, St. Croix;
– 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the St. John Administrator’s Conference Room at the Battery, St. John.

More information can be obtained by calling the Office of Veterans Affairs at 774-6100 on St. Thomas or 340-773-6663 on St. Croix.
