Education Will Pay for Summer UVI Courses for Teachers, Paraprofessionals and Staff

April 24, 2009 – The Department of Education will pay territorial public school teachers, paraprofessionals and support staff (including administrators) 100 per cent of tuition costs and associated fees for one, three-credit course at the University of the Virgin Islands for the summer 2009 sessions I and II. All of the courses offered to paraprofessionals will be at the undergraduate level, while courses offered to teachers and other non-teaching staff can be either at the graduate or undergraduate level, according to a press release from Education Acting Director of Human Resources Nicole Jacobs.
The sign-up period will be between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., from Monday, May 4 through Friday May 8. Teachers must enroll in courses leading to certification, while paraprofessionals must enroll in education courses or other courses leading to an education degree. Other non-teaching staff must enroll in a course related to duties they perform at the department.
Jacobs said, "Due to the limited number of available courses, interested individuals are asked to act quickly as the selections will be made on a first-come, first-serve basis. No phone sign ups will be allowed. Individuals are further reminded that course textbooks are their sole responsibility and reimbursement to the department will be required in the event they fail a course."
