Dec. 12, 2006 — Emancipation Garden will be ringing with the Christmas spirit through Wednesday as a host of entertainers and choral groups this week fill the park with music and song. Wednesday's program begins at 7 p.m.
Against the backdrop of a well-lit park, choral groups on Monday spread holiday joy with performances during the 11th annual Caroliers Night, sponsored jointly by We From Upstreet and The Committee to Revive our Culture.
Glenn "Kwabena" Davis and a handful of the members of "Voices of Love," a perennial favorite choral group during the holidays, took to the stage first. As the multicolored lights around the David Monsanto Bandstand flickered in the night, the choir pleased the crowd with "Angels from the Realms of Glory" and "Baby Jesus Come from the Heaven Up Above."
Cliff Finch and some of his musically inclined friends provided some selections and served as the house band for the entertainers. Finchs sister, Yvette, and Myron Jackson were the masters of ceremonies for the two-hour program, which was broadcast live on territorial radio stations and videotaped for later playback on WTJX-TV Channel 12.
The event this year was held at Emancipation Garden because the usual venue, Roosevelt Park, is under renovation. Jackson noted, "We dont feel out of place here because even Emancipation Garden is a part of UpStreet (district)."
The Eudora Kean High School "Singers Club," Memorial Moravian Gospel Choir and the Party Hardy Caroliers all entertained Monday with their renditions of various Christmas tunes. The climax came when all choral groups gathered on stage to perform a medley of carols, including: "The First Noel," "Let There Be Peace on Earth," "Angels We Have Heard on High" and the local favorite, "Mama Bake the Johnny Cake Christmas Coming."
The activities continued Tuesday with a Youth Night featuring St. Andrews Episcopal Youth Choir, Frederick Lutheran Church Steel Orchestra and the Eudora Kean High School Band.
On Wednesday, Cultural Night performers will include the Lockhart Elementary School Quadrille Dancers, Prophecy Elementary Quadrille Dancers, the Mungo Niles Cultural Dancers and the St. Thomas Heritage Dancers.
Wednesday's activities begin at 7 p.m.
