UVI Scholarship Application Deadline is Jan. 8
Interested UVI undergraduate students are invited to apply for scholarships offered by the University for the Spring 2007 Semester. The application deadline is Monday, Jan. 8. To be considered, students must complete a UVI scholarship application form (PDF File – PDF reader), have a minimum grade point average of 3.0, be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and have completed at least one semester at UVI. For additional requirements and more information about available scholarships, call the UVI Office of Institutional Advancement at 693-1040.
UVI Community Invited to Join Crucian Christmas Festival Troupe
The UVI community is invited to participate in the University's 2007 Crucian Festival troupe that will march in the adult's parade on Jan. 7. "Playing Mas: From Many Cultures, One Virgin Islands" is the troupe's theme. Registration is $135 for UVI students and $165 for non-UVI students. An "early bird" special price of $100 for UVI students and $135 for non-students is available to those who sign-up by Dec. 11. UVI Students Earn Leadership Awards
University of the Virgin Islands students Rick Grant, Toriefa Alexander and Howard Forbes Jr., earned Certified Student Leader credentials during the recent National Conference on Student Leadership held Nov. 15-20 at Lake Buena Vista, Fla. UNCFSP Establishes Web Portal for Accessing Grants, Scholarships
The United Negro College Fund Special Programs Corporation (UNCFSP) has announced the establishment of a new, integrated registration and resume system for student, faculty and professional use. The system is available at www.uncfsp.org/register. UNCFSP provides hundreds of thousands of dollars to support underserved and underrepresented populations, including minority institutions, faculty and students. The registration system serves as a portal to a wide range of opportunities including grants, scholarships, fellowships and employment.
Animal Science Seminar Set Dec. 7
A seminar on animal science by Jeff Wuenschel, a candidate for the AES Research Specialist in Animal Science position, will be presented from 3 to 4:30 p.m. today (Dec. 7) in room 133 of UVI's Research and Extension Building on the St. Croix Campus. Wuenschel's seminar title is: "Effects of Feeding Supplemental Eicosapentanoic Acid and Docosahexanoic Acid to Beef Females on Reproductive Responses and Free Fatty Acids." UVI Students Encouraged to Apply for Exchange Program in Denmark
UVI students are encouraged to apply for one of two student ambassador positions to be sponsored by the V.I.'s Friends of Denmark Society and the Danish West Indian Society in 2007. Next July, the society will host a student from Denmark who will participate in a cultural exchange program in the Virgin Islands. Following that, the society will provide all-expense-paid trips to Denmark for two students, one each from the St. Croix and the St. Thomas/St. John districts. Jan. 8 is the deadline for applications from students in the St. Thomas/St. John district. (Applications for the St. Croix slot are already being evaluated.) The students will spend three weeks with host families in Denmark. In addition to expenses, the students will receive spending money and an allowance for clothing. Applicants must be 18 to 23 years old and be U.S. citizens and residents of the U.S.V.I. for at least 10 years. Details and applications are available from Dr. Judith A. Extension Service Schedules Holiday Baking Workshops on St. Thomas
Free holiday baking workshops will be offered by the Family and Consumer Sciences Program of UVI's Cooperative Extension Service on Dec. 12 and 13 on St. Thomas. Workshops will run from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on both days. They will take place in the CES (New House) Building on the University's St. Thomas campus. Little Theatre Sets Auditions for Spring Production of 'Caribbean Babylon'
The UVI Little Theatre has announced that auditions for its spring 2007 production of "Caribbean Babylon" will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 16 and 17, 2007. Auditions will be held in the Little Theatre, located in the Classroom Administration Building on UVI's St. Thomas campus. "Caribbean Babylon," written by St. Thomas native Gus Edwards, is set on St. Thomas in the 1950s, not long after large-scale tourism became a major economic and cultural force. Seven actors are needed: five black actors (four men and one woman) and two white actors (one man and one woman). The play will run on March 2 through 5 and March 9 through 11. Volunteers Needed to Support UVI Christmas Festival Troupe
Volunteers are needed to help support this year's UVI troupe during the adult's parade of the Crucian Christmas Festival. The parade is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007. At least 25 volunteers are needed. Interested individuals should contact Claude Steele at (340) 692-4181 or send email to csteele@uvi.edu by Dec.11.
UVI-CELL Course Schedule
Registration is ongoing for courses offered by the University of the Virgin Islands' Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center. UVI-CELL provides unique educational opportunities to stimulate professional advancement and personal growth through on site and online (more than 300 courses) programs. Newly announced classes include the following:
* Unleashing the Power of Word – $149: Create and format professional looking letters, memos and reports. One-day workshop. Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
* Building Powerful E-Presentations with PowerPoint – $149: Make presentations that pack a punch with the perfect combination of text, graphics, and multimedia. One-day workshop. Thursday, Dec. 14, 2006 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
* Conversational Spanish II – $300: A continuation of Spanish I. Learn to enhance understanding of Spanish by focusing on communication strategies and conversational skills. Course is 20 hours. Meets from 6 to 8 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays from Jan. 29 to Feb. 21, 2007.
