Territory Lands Prestigious Marketing Award

Feb. 7, 2006 – The territory added another award to its growing roster of honors. This time it was a prestigious bronze Adrian Award given by the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International. The territory captured the award for public relations excellence for a feature article in the June/July 2005 issue of "Caribbean Travel and Life."
The nine-page article by St. John resident Gerald Singer focused on snorkeling in the Virgin Islands. St. John resident Steve Simonsen took the photographs.
Numerous beaches get mention, including Trunk Bay on St. John, Buck Island on St. Croix and Coki Beach on St. Thomas.
Various water sports businesses are listed under a local knowledge section.
The organization presented the award to the Virgin Islands at a Jan. 30 dinner held at the New York Marriott Marquis.
"The HSMAI Adrian Award competition is the largest and most prestigious travel event of its kind," Tourism Commissioner Pamela Richards said in a press release received Tuesday.
Richards said the award demonstrated success of the territory's public relations and advertising programs.
Tourism Department spokesman Steve Bornn said that all the awards received by the territory are important.
"It shows what we do is science, not happenstance," he said.
The competition attracted more than 1,200 entries from 35 countries and destinations around the world.
Founded in 1927, HSMAI is an organization of sales and marketing professionals representing all segments of the hospitality industry and has a strong focus on education.
