UVI Foundation to Host Celebrity Golf Classic

June 17, 2005 -The Foundation for the University of the Virgin Islands will host its first Celebrity Golf Classic from July 14 through July 17 at the Carambola Golf and Beach Resort on St. Croix. Celebrities from the National Football League, the National Basketball Association and the entertainment industry are expected to participate in this event in support of the Foundation s endowment.
Among the celebrities who are expected to participate are Lee Elder, the first African American to play the Masters Tournament in 1975, Oscar-nominee Samuel L. Jackson, former tennis professional and broadcaster Katrina Adams, current and former NBA players Norman Nixon, Maurice Lucas, Randy Smith, Eric Williams and Gus Williams, actors Richard Roundtree, Tanya Roberts and Christopher Rich, and current and former NFL players Fred Smoot, Darrin Sharper, Willie Gault and Steve Martin.
The UVI Foundation Celebrity Golf Classic is an opportunity to bring visitors to the territory in support of education, says Joseph Boschulte, UVI s vice president for Institutional Advancement and executive director of the Foundation. This is an event that the University hopes will be well attended and that will be eagerly awaited year after year.
The golf, networking and recreational activities begin with a welcome reception on July 14t at Government House on St. Croix. On the morning of Friday, July 15 several of the celebrity participants are expected to participate in golf practice and clinics, followed by a press conference at 11a.m. The day will culminate at the Resort with dinner and a fashion show featuring the designs of Alejandra Jackson. Vocalist Sarah J. Fox will perform. The tournament begins on Saturday, July 16 at 9 a.m.
