Community Alert: WAPA Addressing Power Outages

Feb. 4, 2005 – The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority was forced to take Feeders 4, 6, 8 and 9 off line for several minutes Friday, due to an equipment malfunction that occurred at the Richmond Plant.
According to a release issued from WAPA late Friday afternoon, the 1:50 p.m. outage happened when the exhaust transition duct between Unit 16 and the waste heat recovery boiler failed. As a result, WAPA had to take Unit 16 off line and open several feeders.
Feeders 4 and 8 were both restored to service within 20 minutes of the outage, the release said. Feeder 9 was brought back on line 2:38 p.m. Feeder 6 remained off line until approximately 6:40 p.m.
Feeder 6 services the Judith's Fancy, Cane Bay and Mon Bijou areas. The authority initially expected to have feeder 6 restored to service by 4:30 p.m., the release said, but was unable to bring Unit 17 on line by that time. WAPA is working to restore service to the affected areas as quickly as possible. Spokeswoman Laurie Christian said she expected power to be restored "shortly."
