Tropical Depression Number Nine Has Formed

Sept. 2, 2004 – Although the airwaves are in a frenzy about Hurricane Frances' approaching attack on southeast Florida, Virgin Islanders should look to the east.
Tropical Depression 9 formed late Thursday afternoon about 555 miles southwest of the Cape Verde Islands. It was heading west toward the Lesser Antilles.
"It's too far away to really say, but it should track south of the Virgin Islands," said Benjamin Aponte, a meteorological technician at the National Weather Service in San Juan.
He said it would take about a week to get to the region.
As of 5 p.m. Thursday, Tropical Depression 9 is centered at 9.7 degrees north latitude and 29.1 degrees west longitude.
Winds are 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph. The storm is expected to strengthen during the next day. Tropical Depression 9 is moving west at 19 mph.
The pressure stands at 1007 millibars or 29.79 inches.
If Tropical Depression 9 becomes a named storm, it will be called Ivan.
