'Give Twelve' Campaign to Channel Funds to WTJX

Aug. 20, 2004 – With the need for money always a pressing issue, the territory's public television station, WTJX, is launching a major fund-raising drive it's calling the "Channel 12 Give Twelve Campaign."
"Our objective is to have every person give an increment of 12 to start," development director Yvette deLaubanque said.
The station is hoping that young school children will dig into their pockets for 12 cents. While this may not seem like much, deLaubanque pointed out that every little bit counts.
She anticipates that youths will ante up $1.20, adults $12, small businesses $120, and large business $1,200. "And $12,000 would be most welcome," she said.
WTJX hopes to raise $600,000 during the campaign, which will run from September through December, deLaubanque said.
It will kick off Sept. 15 on St. Thomas on Addie Ottley's "Face to Face" program and Sept. 16 on St. Croix on Marise James's "Topics" show. Both air at 8 p.m. Both evenings, viewers will be invited to make their donations on air.
An e-mail campaign and visits to schools and government offices will follow.
DeLaubanque also said WTJX will hold a golf tournament at Carambola Golf Course on St. Croix on Oct. 17. "We're inviting every golfer to register," she said. For more information about that, call Carambola at 778-5638 or deLaubanque at 774-6255.
The fund-raising campaign will wrap up with a "Twelve Days of Christmas" Gala on Dec. 12 at St. Peter Mountain Greathouse on St. Thomas. Tickets run $120. Admission includes dinner, an open bar, music, dancing and door prizes.
"Door prizes might be what's in the song," deLaubanque said, singing a few bars of "The Twelve Days of Christmas." The event also will include the drawing for the station's raffle of a new car, she said. The type of car hasn't been decided, but tickets will sell for $10.
Anyone wanting to make a donation to the station should send a check to V.I. Public Television System, PO Box 7879, St. Thomas VI 00801.
Meanwhile, the station accepts memberships at any time. For more information about joining or otherwise lending support, visit the WTJX Web site.
