Coast Guard Officer Ends V.I Tour

May 19, 2004 – U. S. Coast Guard Lt. John Reinert was honored by the V. I. Port Authority Wednesday for his assistance to the authority and to territory residents during the past three years.
During the authority's monthly board meeting, Darlan Brin, VIPA executive director, presented Reinert with a plaque commending his service. Brin said Reinert had been especially helpful with the authority's Crown Bay development, homeland security issues and with grant funds.
And Reinert expressed his appreciation in working with VIPA and Brin. "Our first priority is always security and VIPA has been very cooperative. The director has always been available for anything we have needed." Reinert said he likes to form a partnership, instead of authority over the entities the USCG works with.
Lt. Christopher Gagnon, who will have been here two years in August, will be taking over Rienert's duties when Reinert's tour of duty in the Virgin Islands ends and he leaves next week. Reinert said he will be moving to Washington, D. C. where he will be team leader for the foreign port assessment team.
What that means, he said later, is that he will be assessing security at foreign ports under new international regulations, to make a determination of what caliber security the Coast Guard would need to give vessels when they come into the ports. He will be visiting ports worldwide, he said.
Asked what he will miss most about St. Thomas, he said, rather ironically, "the water." "Although I'm on the water a lot of the time, I didn't get as much time to go the beach, go in the water, as I would have liked."
